My Testimony

For the past two years, I have worked as an independent consultant.  I took this route because every job opportunity I came across two years ago was not panning out in my favor.  I have done well in the consulting field, but the work is lonely and you don't get the opportunity to see the end result of your work.  So, I have decided to reenter the traditional world of work.  Technically, we are still in the midst of a recession and the chances of me landing a new gig right away seemed slim.  I have prepared my mind for a long period of interviewing and negotiations.

Nonetheless, I decided to employ the power of positive thought.  Today I picked up an old book off the shelf entitled "The Prayer of Jabez".  In this text, several accounts were shared about blessings, the power of thought and prayer, and great rewards.  I decided to reread this prayer today. As I read it, the hairs on the back of my neck started to stand.  The phone rang, and it was a Managing Director of a non-profit organization that was too busy to call me during our scheduled time [yesterday].  Today, I felt a sense of urgency in his voice.  He said that he has a candidate and an offer on the table for the position that I had applied for.  Yet, he said that if the offer was not accepted that I may get a call this evening to schedule an interview.  Since I graduated grad school, this organization has been on my radar, but things never seemed to line up.  When I hung up the phone I stared at the book that contained the prayer that I just prayed. My only thought, God.

It's lunch time and I fix myself a bowl of beans and rice.  As I am sitting down at the table I noticed the book is still open to the page that listed the prayer.  I decided to read the prayer again.  When I finished reading  the prayer, I turned my focus to my lunch.  Before I could take a bite, the phone rang.  It was one of my clients requesting workshop dates for the month of October.  I booked the dates with her and felt assured that if nothing came through on the job front that I was still in good with my clients.

A few hours had passed,  and I decided to read the prayer again.  Before I could get the last word of the prayer out, the phone rang.  It was the HR manager of a firm that I interviewed with yesterday.  She was calling to tell me that I have a third interview with the COO.  This woman was southern, and throughout the interview with her she came across as unimpressed and bored.  At the end of the interview, she said that I should hear back from her next week.  A day later I am scheduled to meet the head of the organization.  After the phone call, I scrambled around a bit to prepare for tomorrow but slowed down enough to focus my thoughts.  I thought, document your testimony, because this ain't nothing but God at work.

The Prayer of Jabez 1 Chronicles 4:10
Suggestion:  If you have something that you are trying to attain, clear your mind, focus on what it is you want, and read this prayer.

  1. An update:

Within a month of starting my job search I received a job offer. I continued to think and pray the Jabez prayer throughout the process. The employer that made the job offer originally went with another candidate, but the deal fell through. I wasn't the least bit offended when this information was shared with me. What God has for you is for you. Hotep!
